High Energy Density Physics Group receives DURIP grant

Research Assistant Professor Kramer Akli and Research Scientist Michael Storm of the High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) Group will be leading the design and construction of a new target chamber for the Scarlet laser facility, thanks to a $405K grant recently awarded them by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research through the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).  Compared with the existing facility, this state-of-the-art chamber will have room for more diagnostic instrumentation, multiple laser beams, and easier access for the graduate students and other users studying the physics of ultra-intense, short-pulse laser interactions with matter.  The group is planning to use both the existing and the new chamber, switching between them depending on the experiment being run. This will make OSU’s Scarlet laser facility one of the few in the US where distinctly different HEDP projects can be simultaneously investigated.
