Professor Douglass Schumacher Receives University Distinguished Teaching Award

During a somewhat "contrived" group meeting in the Smith Seminar Room on February 12, there was a surprise interruption.  President Gordon Gee, Divisional Dean Peter March, President of the Alumni Association Archie Griffin, Chair Jim Beatty, a photographer and videographer burst into the meeting to announce that Douglass Schumacher was the winner of one of ten 2013 Alumni Awards for Distinguished Teaching. The surprise was evident especially when Doug realized that his wife and son were also there.  This award honors faculty for their superior teaching.  Nominations come from present and former students and colleagues and the selection is made by a committee of alumni, students and faculty.  President Gee presented Doug with an apple and a letter officially notifying him of the award and of the $1200 annual rate increase and $3000 honorarium that accompanies it.  The High Energy Density Physics Group were all in attendance and celebrated with refreshments following the announcement.

Congratulations Doug!!
